| Rohan and his three kids | Rohan's kids lost their mother in early 2008. Rohan earns between 1,500 and 3,000 rupees a month and works as a handicraftsman. The family used to be well-off, not rich but comfortable, and they lost everything, including their house, to pay for mom's laboratory tests and doctor visits, as nobody could figure out what was wrong with her. After many doctors, the last one determined HIV/AIDS and referred them to the local HIV clinic for treatment, but it was too late. Rohan and his kids now live in a tiny rented house in a slum area in Mysore. Dad, also +, is being treated for tuberculosis. His daughter tested positive for HIV, and the two sons are negative. The kids, ages eight, six, and five, are adorably cute, happy and playful, healthy looking, and go to school everyday. |
| Kalavati and her grannie | Kalavati lost her mother recently, and now lives with her grandmother. Grannie works every day cleaning houses to earn enough to care for Kalavati. Kalavati attends a nearby school, and studies hard in an English-language school. They live in a tiny, two-room house in a village area near the city. |
| Mahesh and his two nieces | Mahesh, uncle to Anita and Ambika (age six and eight), took the boys in about a year ago after their mom (his sister) and dad both died. Mahesh, a young man, just started a family with his wife. They live in the back of their little business, an old watch shop that supplements its sales by renting DVDs. Their house has no electricity and they cook using firewood. Uncle lives in a village far from Mysore, and takes the girls to the city for their monthly checkups, a four-hour bus ride each way. |
| Mohan and Aunty Vasanti | Little Mohan lives with his aunt and uncle. His mom (aunt's sister) died at birth and his dad ran away when she was pregnant with him. Aunt tells neighbors that Mohan is her child, to avoid questions. They live in a slum area in Mysore, and aunt works in the city cleaning houses for a living. |
